tempera on panel (75 × 179 cm) — ca. 1310
According to art expert Vasari, Michelangelo commented on this panel by Giotto, saying that the scene could not have been portrayed more naturally or truthfully. This is dubious. After all, few historical facts are known about the life of Mary. The Bible does not mention her death or funeral. Other texts tell of Mary's desire to see her son again, and that by some miracle all apostles were present at her death.
